Module 2: Weekly teaching practicums

To receive accreditation by Yoga Alliance, teacher trainees must complete two practicums for a total of 60 hours, but can choose to attend 2 more as electives. While the teaching practicum is a required component of the 300-hour program, the practicums are also eligible for Yoga Alliance Continuing Education credits (CEU), and can be taken separately of the program.

At the practicums, you observe, assist and teach regular drop-in classes held at the studio in Hamilton or Toronto. Here are the skills that you’ll learn:

  • taking the seat of the teacher and deepening your teaching practice
  • reading bodies, including basic hands-on adjustments
  • participating in classes led by your peers
  • participating in group feedback dialogue following classes. Feedback will include safety, knowledge, connection, breath, cueing, flow/momentum, timing, voice, and language
  • effective listening and communication tools
  • preparing sequences and integrating class themes

The practicum consists of 2 components:

Teaching component (60 mins)

  • You will be teaching a one-hour yoga class.
  • You will teach in pairs for your first teaching experience and will be given a sequence
  • You will have at least one assistant who is a TT co-director
  • This class will be open to the public

Feedback (60mins)

  • You will receive constructive feedback from your peers as well as from your teacher.
  • Feedback is integral to teaching. It is a gift to learn what resonated with each person and what you might do differently next time.
  • Learning how to give feedback is also a skill. Teacher trainees giving feedback will also receive feedback from the teacher.

Module 2 is an additional $350 and can be taken at the Downward Dog Yoga Centre in Toronto or at Suru Studio in Hamilton.
